Interview with Vittorio Romiti, CEO of Italiansped S.p.A.

What is your company doing to make transport and logistics sustainable?

Italiansped, part of the SACMI Group, stands out for its focus on sustainability, a shared commitment that aims to safeguard the environment by deploying innovative technology and appropriate production processes.

That commitment is measured according to international standards and documented in the Integrated Annual Report, drawn up in compliance with GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards.

Italiansped - a non-stop innovator with a sharp focus on customer needs - offers an advanced federative tracking service for multimodal shipments. The centralized platform lets customers monitor shipments in real time, providing greater transparency, optimizing delivery times and ensuring prompt action should logistical problems arise. Launched in 2022 and upgraded in 2023, the system ensures interoperability with carriers’ databases and software.

This works in concert with the Green Dashboard, a new tool now being implemented: this monitors the carbon footprint of shipments and provides customers with data for their own sustainability reports. It’s the latest in a series of initiatives, which go hand in hand with other sustainable practices adopted by the company. All this has led to the following results:

- Waste production reduced by 3% in the three-year period 2021-2023.
- Natural gas consumption reduced by 23% in the same period.
- Recycling of waste paper/cardboard/wood at all company sites thanks to careful sorting, which aims to reduce disposal costs.
- Optimization of container loads to minimize per-unit emissions.
- Adoption of paperless solutions.
- Assessment of the supply chain from a sustainability perspective.

These achievements have encouraged us to pursue further sustainability goals, once again highlighting our company’s keen sense of social responsibility.

What do you ask of your partners to make transport and logistics sustainable?

Italiansped is a global forwarding player. In 2023 we exported goods to 140 countries. We work with all the main global carriers, on sea, air and land. Of course, many of them are companies with multi-billion dollar revenues and implement their own sustainability policies. In general, our supplier selection process is regulated by the Group’s code of ethics and by organizational management model 231/01, which we adopted some time ago. In parallel, we urge our closest partners to upgrade their fleets by including electric or low-environmental-impact vehicles.
